Why you need a Chimney Cap

Why Should a Chimney Cap Should Be Considered a Necessary investment?

The answer to this question is pretty straightforward, and it all has to do with a substance called creosote that clings to the walls of your flue when you have a fire. Creosote is a flammable substance that becomes even more dangerous when it is allowed to build up over an extended period of time.It can mix with water and start to become acidic, which causes it to start eating away at the silica in your mortar joints.

Mortar joints are made of cement, and are designed to hold the flue together. When you get a situation where the silica is removed from the joints, the mortar essentially gets reduced to sand. It will eventually deteriorate to the point where it begins to fall out, and that means the potential for some real damage.

There are some pretty scary things that can happen once your flue tiles start to deteriorate. Every time you burn wood, you create gases such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as a few others. This is not a problem when your fireplace is in working order, but when it isn’t, those gases can escape the flue and seep into other parts of your home if you don’t have a cap installed.
